Healthy Packs
Deutsche Bank Championship

By: Shauna Matteson

On Thursday, September 2, the PGA TOUR Wives Association had the privilege to partner once again with State Street Corporation and Stop and Shop Grocery Stores. This was the second annual Healthy Packs Initiative that would ultimately benefit Boston area Boys and Girls Clubs. Stop and Shop donated reusable grocery bags and food items such as applesauce, condensed milk, granola bars, canned tuna, cereal boxes, juice boxes, etc. Our PTWA volunteers, State Street volunteers, and Stop and Shop volunteers all gathered up and split evenly into 3 competitive teams. The teams consisted of Team South Boston, Team Dorchester, and Team Brockton, and each team represented the area in which the food would be delivered by the Greater Boston Food Bank. The Deutsche Bank Championship staff had prepared 3 separate tents and each tent had tables of food items to be packed. After a quick meet and greet and a strategy building session, the horn blew and it was up to each team of volunteers to pack 665 reusable bags with 1 of each food item in 35 minutes or less! The winning team would ultimately receive an additional $1,000 donation to the area in which the team was representing. All of the volunteers really got into the competition and you could hear different teams chanting cheers and stirring up the competition even more. It was a very fun and fast competition that everyone enjoyed. Overall, the team that packed the fastest was Team South Boston. The idea of the Healthy Packs Initiative was to offer young people a chance to try more nutritious food. This event left all of the volunteers feeling like they were helping kids to make wiser food decisions.
