"A Powerful Noise" by Dr. Sheila Johnson
Transitions Championship
By: Amy Wilson

On Wednesday, March 18th, the PGA Tour Wives Association members were treated to a private screening of Dr. Sheila Johnson's “A Powerful Noise” documentary.  Among other things, Dr. Johnson is an international ambassador for CARE and host of the 2009 Transitions Championship. Her film focuses on fueling the movement to end the marginalization of women and ultimately end poverty in thousands of communities. The TOUR wives were inspired by the stories of incredibly driven women using their talents to lift other women. Women lifting up women is part of the PGA TOUR Wives Association’s mission. What a wonderful reminder and energizer for the wives to see the power behind every single woman.

After the screening, Dr. Sheila Johnson led a panel discussion. The panel included: Amy Wilson, President of the PGA TOUR Wives Association, Dale Mott, Senior Director of CARE, and Connie Falvo, Director of External Affairs for Transitions.

Some of the information discussed was:

  • Of the 1.3 billion people living in absolute poverty around the globe, 70% are women and girls.
  • Women work two-thirds of the world’s working hours, yet earn only 10% of the income.
  • Women produce half the world’s food, yet own only 1 percent of its land.
