Women's Build/Habitat for Humanity
Verizon Heritage Classic
By Kate Rose

During the Verizon Heritage Classic tournament, our members put in some WO-man hours to help build a house for Habitat for Humanity in the Bluffton area of South Carolina. This was a “women’s build” for Habitat, meaning that all of the volunteers hours, as well as much of the professional labor on this house, was performed by women.

The Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity, founded in 1990, has built 76 simple homes in the Hilton Head/Bluffton areas of South Carolina, providing affordable housing to more than 300 people in need. The homes are earned by deserving families who have contributed “sweat equity” as well as met other qualifying criteria.

The house was built for a single mom, Michelle, and her two daughters. Because so many of our members turned out to help, we were also able to do work on another house located nearby. Members painted the interior of the house, mixed and poured concrete nailed up cladding on the side of the house and generally had a great time. It is so rewarding to be involved with such a worthwhile charity, where your efforts are so clearly visible and satisfying. Thanks to all of our members who helped on this project and to the great people from Habitat who assisted us in organizing this project.

We have several fundraising and Volunteer Service Projects in the planning stages. Watch for more information as the details are confirmed!
