2nd Annual Barbecue at
Walter Reed Army Medical Center AT&T National
By: Shauna Matteson
On Wednesday, July 1 the PGA TOUR Wives Association joined PGA TOUR’s Birdies for the Brave to host the 2nd Annual Family BBQ at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The event was scheduled to kick off at 6:30pm; however, the residents of the Mologne House were excited to get the festivities started and showed up early to help us set up. With two long BBQ buffet tables, a live band rocking in the background, kids getting their faces painted, and TOUR players signing golf balls and hats; well, it was just a wonderful sight to behold! Wheelchairs, crutches and prosthesis didn’t stop these wounded warriors from hitting some practice golf shots or participating in our PaintFest project. This night was a unique opportunity for our PGA TOUR families to hear stories from the wounded warriors, about where they came from and how they ended up at Walter Reed. It was difficult to determine who was more interested in who’s stories; the players about the warriors’ lives or the warriors about life on TOUR! It was also very special to see the TOUR children playing along side with the wounded warrior children. It was a special evening for everyone; lots of laughs, great food, great music and fun activities as we celebrated those who made the ultimate sacrifices for all of us and enjoyed, if only for a few hours, what a BBQ at Walter Reed is all about!
3 lb whole chicken (cook chicken at 350 for 1 1/2 hour OR buy a pre-cooked chicken)
2 cans Cream of Chicken Soup
2 cups milk
1 pt (16 oz) sour cream
2 cups cheddar cheese (shredded), more as desired
2 cups monterey jack cheese (shredded), more as desired
12 flour tortillas
Optional:
2 Tbsp taco seasoning
1 can Rotell diced tomatoes (mexican style)
small can of chopped olives
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Peel all the meat off the chicken and put in a large bowl. Combine the Cream of Chicken soup, milk, sour cream, and half of the cheese. Combine half of this mixture with the peeled chicken. (If you would like a little kick, add the taco seasoning, the can of Rotell diced tomatoes, and half the can of olives.) Fill the tortillas with the chicken mixture and wrap up like burritos. Place in a 13 x 9 cake pan. Cover the enchiladas with the remaining half of the sauce and cheese (if you added olives to the chicken mixture, sprinkle the remaining olives on top.) Cook uncovered for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
Breakfast with Barbara the Memorial Tournament presented by Morgan Stanley
By: Kate Rose
The Wednesday morning of the Memorial Tournament was a special morning for the wives and significant others of PGA TOUR pros playing in Jack Nicklaus' tournament in Ohio. It was a chance to have breakfast and a chat with the first lady of golf, Mrs. Barbara Nicklaus. For some, it was the opportunity to spend some time with a favorite friend that they had gotten to know over the years, either as the Lady Captain of the President's Cup team, or just on the golf circuit around the world. For others, such as myself, it was a first meeting with a lady admired from afar, one full of stories of life on TOUR before we knew it, and ready to share experiences I was looking forward to hearing about. Barbara graciously opened her home to over 20 members of the PGA TOUR Wives Association, for coffee, snacks, and a Q&A.
We had plenty of questions about Barbara's experiences of bringing up 5 children on TOUR. Many fascinating tales sprinkled with plenty of wisdom from a modest, remarkable and inspiring lady - no wonder no one wanted to leave, and no wonder Jack went on to have such a legendary career with such steadfast support from Barbara!
"A Powerful Noise" by Dr. Sheila Johnson Transitions Championship
By: Amy Wilson
On Wednesday, March 18th, the PGA Tour Wives Association members were treated to a private screening of Dr. Sheila Johnson's “A Powerful Noise” documentary. Among other things, Dr. Johnson is an international ambassador for CARE and host of the 2009 Transitions Championship. Her film focuses on fueling the movement to end the marginalization of women and ultimately end poverty in thousands of communities. The TOUR wives were inspired by the stories of incredibly driven women using their talents to lift other women. Women lifting up women is part of the PGA TOUR Wives Association’s mission. What a wonderful reminder and energizer for the wives to see the power behind every single woman.
After the screening, Dr. Sheila Johnson led a panel discussion. The panel included: Amy Wilson, President of the PGA TOUR Wives Association, Dale Mott, Senior Director of CARE, and Connie Falvo, Director of External Affairs for Transitions.
Some of the information discussed was:
Of the 1.3 billion people living in absolute poverty around the globe, 70% are women and girls.
Women work two-thirds of the world’s working hours, yet earn only 10% of the income.
Women produce half the world’s food, yet own only 1 percent of its land.
