Taste of the TOUR
Travelers Championship
By: Athena Perez

This year at the Travelers Championship, the PTWA teamed up with Travelers to bring food, fun, and wine to the Pro–Am participants in an effort to raise money for some very important people in the Greater Hartford area.  On Wednesday, June 24, the ladies of the TOUR hosted “Taste of the TOUR” at the tournament’s Pro-Am party. This unique event brought together TOUR players’ wine labels such as Palmer, Faldo, Weir, Player, Daly, Donald, Els, Nobilo, Norman, Goosen, and PGA TOUR Wines for a wine tasting, and both a silent and live auction.

There were many VIP’s associated with the event (actors, TOUR Players, executives), but the most important? The beneficiaries - The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and the Greater Hartford Jaycees. The Hole in the Wall Gang camp, founded by Paul Newman in 1988, is a camp for children with cancer and other serious illnesses.  The cost to send one child to camp is approximately $2,500. The Greater Hartford Jaycees is a membership organization for men and women ages 21 through 41 with a focus on leadership development through community service. With support from fundraisers like Taste of the TOUR, the Greater Hartford Jaycees will continue to provide people with opportunities to better themselves and get the experiences they may not have had otherwise.

We are happy to report that the evening raised $30,000 for charities. The auction items included a complete flight of wine bottles autographed by the above mentioned TOUR players, a vineyard tour, a teaching session with a professional PGA TOUR player and his instructor, as well as other great items.

“This was a great opportunity for the PGA TOUR Wives Association to introduce PGA TOUR players’ wine labels to the greater Hartford area while raising money for two incredible local organizations,” says Athena Perez, event co-chair and PTWA member.  “Our mission is to give back to the communities in which the PGA TOUR visits, where our husbands play, and the communities that become our families’ homes for part of the year. We were given this amazing platform by Travelers to host this event and we jumped at the opportunity. We consider this event a success and are so proud to have been able to be a part of such a great event.”

Walk the Course Against Domestic Violence
Quail Hollow Championship
By: Kelly Warren

On Tuesday of Quail Hollow Championship week, the PGA TOUR Wives Association partnered with The Avon Foundation and the Quail Hollow Championship to sponsor Walk the Course Against Domestic Violence. The weather was perfect and the Charlotte community embraced our mission to bring awareness to this worthy cause. Over 900 walkers showed up to walk the beautiful Quail Hollow golf course and, in the end, we raised over $90,000! Grants from the proceeds of the walk were presented to two deserving beneficiaries, the Shelter of Gaston County and the United Family Services Shelter for Battered Women, to help their agencies grow and assist victims of domestic violence in North Carolina.

Thank you to all the wives who walked and raised money to support our cause. The PTWA was the highest fundraising team, bringing in over $7,700! Also, a big thank you to our husbands and significant others who came to the post-walk reception and spent time signing autographs and meeting the top fundraisers and sponsors. We were honored to be a part of this event and we want to thank the following sponsors who supported this event and helped us make a difference in the lives of thousands who are affected by domestic violence.

2009 PGA TOUR Wives Golf Classic
The Honda Classic

The 2009 PGA TOUR Wives Golf Classic was held on Tuesday, March 3 on the beautiful Haig Course at PGA National during The Honda Classic. As the TOUR Wives competed in a friendly 9-hole shootout for charity, the TOUR pros did all the heavy lifting on the course while wearing pink caddy bibs – carrying golf bags, raking bunkers and tending the flags.

Tournament Director Angie Oberholser did a tremendous job organizing this event and, at the end of the day, over $99,000 was raised for our charities!

Thanks to our many sponsors and supporters, listed below, for making this event such a great success. Special thanks to Kelly Blanchard, Ed McEnroe, and Ken Kennerly from The Honda Classic; to Ed Lynch and his staff from Sentient Jet; to Monty Foster and Sally Sevareid, better known as Mo & Sally from kool105.5 for their participation and incredible promotion of our event; and, lastly, but certainly not least, to all of our players and their husbands who gave up their afternoon to support this fundraiser.
